Here, just to kick things off, is a little suggestion that works well in many different styles:

Most genres of music have scales associated with them. In classical music the focus is very much on major and minor scales; folk music of various lands has scale forms peculiar to a particular region or ethnic group; while jazz draws on many scales, there is a strong emphasis on the modes.

It can often be effective to build an improvisation by splitting a scale into upper and lower sections and using these to introduce structure and balance.

Examples:
In C major, the sections might be
CDEFG GABC

A harmonic minor
ABCDE EFG#A

major pentatonic on C
CDE GAC

Anybody have any favourite or unusual scales to share?

Audrey
